Artist of the Week
María José Siri, soprano
Uruguayan soprano María José Siri, star of La Scala, Milan and many other opera houses for her performances above all in the title role of Verdi’s Aida, will be shining as Tosca at the 2011 Savonlinna Opera Festival.
A few years ago, having first dazzled audiences at leading operatic venues in South America (such as the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires and the Teatro Municipal de Santiago), she went into orbit over here in Europe. Confining herself mainly to Italian repertoire, she has rocketed upwards in her career and made guest appearances at houses ranging from the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and the Semperoper in Dresden to the Moscow Bolshoi. In particular she has excelled as Verdi’s Aida, a role she has sung in Milan, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, at the Bregenz Festival and elsewhere, and this spring in Florence.
Puccini’s Tosca, another popular soprano role in classical Italian opera, is a recent addition to María José Siri’s repertoire. Following her Tosca debut in Genoa last year, she now proceeds to Savonlinna. The unique atmosphere and superb acoustics of Olavinlinna Castle along with such eminent colleagues as Massimo Giordano and Juha Uusitalo will provide the perfect opportunity for her to hone her interpretation and immerse herself further in this role.
The sparkling voice of María José Siri can be heard singing Tosca on July 4, 8, 13 & 18.
